Gross pay is your salary before any deductions. Net pay ("take-home pay") is what you actually receive after federal, state, and local income taxes, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), and any other withholdings (health insurance, 401k contributions) are deducted. This calculator uses only the tax rate you specify for simplicity.

How accurate is the net pay estimate?

The net pay calculation is a simplified estimate using the flat tax rate you provide. Actual net pay depends on your filing status (single, married), allowances, state and local taxes, FICA taxes (Social Security 6.2% + Medicare 1.45%), pre-tax deductions (401k, health insurance), and other withholdings. For precise calculations, use your actual pay stub or consult a payroll calculator specific to your state and situation.

What's the difference between bi-weekly and semi-monthly?

Bi-weekly means every two weeks, resulting in 26 pay periods per year (52 ÷ 2). Semi-monthly means twice a month (typically on the 1st and 15th), resulting in 24 pay periods per year. Bi-weekly paychecks are slightly smaller than semi-monthly because there are more of them. However, bi-weekly means you receive 3 paychecks in some months (when there are 5 Fridays or Mondays), while semi-monthly is always exactly 2 per month.

How do I convert an hourly rate to annual salary?

Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For a standard 40-hour week: annual = hourly × 2,080. So $25/hour × 2,080 = $52,000/year. This doesn't account for overtime, paid time off, or unpaid holidays. To use this calculator with an hourly rate, first multiply your hourly rate by 2,080 (or your actual annual hours) to get the annual figure, then enter that.

What tax rate should I use?

A commonly used estimate for US employees is 25–30% to cover combined federal, state, and FICA taxes. For lower incomes ($30K–$40K), 18–22% is often more accurate. For higher incomes ($100K+), 30–35% may be closer. Your most accurate estimate comes from looking at your most recent W-2 or pay stub and dividing total taxes withheld by gross income.

Does this account for overtime pay?

No, this calculator uses straight-time conversion for all hours. It does not apply the 1.5× overtime multiplier for hours above 40 per week under the Fair Labor Standards Act. For salaried (exempt) employees, overtime typically doesn't apply. For hourly workers working overtime, your actual weekly and annual earnings will be higher than this calculator shows.
