How to Use the Tip Calculator

The Tip Calculator makes it effortless to calculate the right tip amount and split the total between any number of people at a restaurant, bar, taxi, hotel, or any service where tipping is customary.

Step 1: Enter the Bill

Enter the pre-tax bill amount (or post-tax, depending on your preference — some people tip on pre-tax amount, others on the full total including tax). The calculation updates instantly as you type.

Step 2: Select a Tip Percentage

Choose from the preset buttons: 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25%. Or click Custom to enter any percentage. If you're not sure what to tip, 18–20% is the standard in the US for sit-down restaurants. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appropriate. For counter service, 10–15% is typical. For delivery, $3–5 per order is common.

Step 3: Split the Bill

Use the slider to select how many people are splitting the bill (1–20). The "Per Person" amount updates automatically. Enable Round up per person to round each person's share up to the nearest dollar, which simplifies cash payments and ensures the full tip is covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

This is a matter of personal preference and local custom. In the US, both practices are common. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically more traditional — you're tipping on the cost of the service, not on the government's portion. However, the difference is small (typically 1–2% of your tip), and most restaurant workers prefer post-tax tipping since it results in a slightly larger tip. Either approach is acceptable.

What does "round up per person" do?

When enabled, each person's share is rounded up to the nearest whole dollar. For example, if the per-person share is $23.47, it rounds up to $24.00. This means the collected total will slightly exceed the actual bill+tip, which helps when paying in cash (no need for exact change). The slight overage goes to the server as additional tip.

What if people ordered different amounts?

This calculator assumes an equal split. If your group wants to split based on individual orders, you'll need to calculate each person's bill separately. A common approach: calculate the total bill + tip, then figure the tip percentage as a multiplier (e.g., 20% tip = multiply each person's order by 1.20), so each person pays 1.20× their individual subtotal.

Is tipping mandatory?

In most countries, tipping is optional. In the United States, however, tips make up the majority of income for many service workers, as US law allows tipped employees to be paid a lower base wage ($2.13/hour federally for tipped workers). While not legally mandatory, leaving no tip for a seated restaurant meal is generally considered socially inappropriate in the US unless service was genuinely poor. In many other countries (Japan, South Korea, much of Europe), tipping is uncommon or even considered rude.

How do I calculate a tip mentally?

A quick mental tip calculation trick: To find 10%, move the decimal point one place left (10% of $85 = $8.50). Double that for 20% ($17.00). For 15%, find 10% and add half of it (10% = $8.50, half = $4.25, total = $12.75). For 20% of any bill, you can also just divide by 5. These mental shortcuts are handy when you don't have your phone.
